AIIM and Microsoft: Working together on the future of ECM

www.office.com/setup Blogs: Today, 70% of organizations use SharePoint, but 50% express concern around whether SharePoint can meet key compliance requirements and serve as an Enterprise Content Management (ECM) system. These numbers come from AIIM International, a non-profit professional organization focused on advocating for and supporting information professionals by providing continuing education, research, and certification programs to help navigate the changing information environment.

On May 13-14, John Mancini, AIIM’s president, and Atle Skjekkeland, AIIM’s Chief Operating Officer, visited Microsoft’s Redmond campus at the invitation of Tejas Mehta, Senior Product Marketing Manager for SharePoint, and Nishan DeSilva, Senior Director of Information Management and Compliance for Microsoft’s Legal and Corporate Affairs organization. During the course of this 2-day event, the AIIM executives learned about Microsoft’s technology goals and discussed the future of cloud, social, and ECM.

The role of cloud computing as part of Microsoft’s product road map for Office 365 was a key point of interest for the AIIM executives, which led to a lively discussion with Jeff Teper, the Corporate Vice President for Microsoft Online Services, about SharePoint 2013, Yammer, Azure, and Microsoft’s overall commitment to user experience and security in the cloud. Since AIIM has extensive SharePoint training materials, the group also spent a great deal of time on the new features and functionalities of the Office 2013 suite, including SharePoint 2013, SkyDrive Pro, and Yammer. By the end of the 2-day session, both the AIIM and Microsoft participants had a better understanding of how both companies are working to make content management and cloud computing easier for ECM colleagues in our industry. As a result, both organizations have a clear idea of how they can partner more effectively to meet the needs of a quickly changing discipline.

As Microsoft moves away from traditional 3-year product release cycles to quarterly cloud releases with the Office 365 product suite, ECM professionals will need to increase their awareness of new functionalities and capabilities. With the introduction of SkyDrive Pro as a part of the Office 365 offering, documents can be stored in the cloud, and accessed from more devices than ever before. While the added flexibility is hugely valuable to end users, it presents a significant departure from traditional ECM practices.
